Make Your Own Herbal Ointment Workshop

This workshop will show you how to make your own homemade products using wax and oil. You will learn about different waxes like beeswax and cocoa butter, as well as different types of oil. You will learn how to make an infused oil, which will allow you to incorporate the healing properties of plants into your creations. We will also discuss the risks and benefits of adding essential oil to ointments. You will have the opportunity to experience all aspects of the making process and will take home your own lip balm and soothing skin ointment at the end of the class. You will receive handouts and recipes to take home as well. All material costs are included in the cost of the workshop.

You will learn about:

  • The difference between a wax and an oil

  • Heat stability of oil

  • Oil ranciditity and antioxidants

  • Common herbs that benefit the skin

  • How to infuse a herb in an oil

  • How to safely use essential oils topically

  • Base recipes to formulate your own oil based skin products including lip balm, skin salve, and muscle rubs

  • General safety cosiderations when applying topical preparations


About Instructor:
Latifa Pelletier-Ahmed is a herbalist, botanist, wild forager and educator. She is a former faculty member at Pacific Rim College in Victoria, BC where she taught botany and herbal medicine. She is qualified with an MSc in Herbal Medicine from London (UK), and a BSc in Botany from the University of Calgary. She is the founder of Latifa's Herbs which offers sliding-scale herbal medicine consultations and hand-crafted medicines. Latifa regularly runs workshops in Alberta and BC about plants and plant medicines. She provides consulting regarding the identification and use of edible and medicinal wild plant species. She is also co-owner of ALCLA Native Plants, a native plant nursery, in Calgary, Alberta.
